- There has been great improvement in achieving primary education
- 2009: enrollment rates increased 97%
- 26 million students are currently enrolled in primary school
- Papua is the worst performing province
- Aceh is the best; gap of 15 percent
- Recent study shows that drop-out rates have reduced to under 2%
- Only 55% of teachers hold the minimum qualifications
- The gap in attendance between urban and rural areas have dropped from 20% to 4%
- An estimated 2.7 million children are not attending schools due to labour related reasons
